Bevan at the double to maintain Ammies 100% start

A hot Saturday afternoon with near record high temperatures, saw the Ammies take on Brocton at their newly renamed stadium, Selco Builders Warehouse Community Stadium, possibly the longest stadium name in Europe.

Danny Moss standing in for Shane Goldrick, made two changes from the team who beat New Mills in midweek, with Gabriel Mooney-Munoz and Jardel Depeiaza making their first starts of the season, with Arron Hevingham and Jake Pollard dropping to the bench. There was also a welcome return from suspension for Joel Aikenhead who took his place on a strong Ammies bench.

Both sides got off to a blistering start in the sweltering heat, with both teams intent on keeping their unbeaten start to the season going.

Ammies keeper, Kyle Haslam, conceded an early corner, having thwarted an attack from Brocton’s Adam Weldon. The corner came to nothing and the Ammies were soon on the attack with Weldon being called on at the other end clearing from striker Joe Bevan, who’s hot pace caused Brocton problems all afternoon.

The first clear chance of the afternoon fell to the returning Gabriel Mooney Munoz in the 10th minute when his well-timed header was well saved by Brocton Keeper Tony Allsopp. Five minutes later, a through ball played Kieran Curtis into space, but his effort was fired over the Brocton bar.

There was nothing to pick between the two sides in the early stages, as the teams got to grips with the difficult weather conditions and both sides looked to maintain possession and create an opening. As the match drifted towards half time both sides had opportunities to open the scoring, with Ammies Bryan Ly, beating Allsopp, but his effort was inches wide. Jardel Depeiaza also shot just over from a tight angle and Joe Bevan fired narrowly wide when well placed.

The half time whistle brought a welcome break for both players and the 167 fans in attendance to take shelter from the heat and take onboard some vital refreshments.

The intensity didn’t diminish in the second half, with full credit to both teams for the levels of fitness they showed in the heat. Brocton had the first chance of the second half, with Haslam producing a fantastic save to deny a header from Cameron Osborne.
That save was to take on even more importance, as the Ammies went straight down the other end and broke the deadlock in the 47th minute. Captain Chris Howard, having another great game, played a lovely ball through to Bevan, who ran onto the pass and beautifully struck his attempt first time, giving the Brocton goalkeeper no chance and bulging the back of the net.

In the 53rd minute, the same combination provided the same result as the Ammies doubled their lead. Howard to Bevan, mirroring the first goal, and Bevan produced an equally beautiful shot into the back of the Brocton net.

The two quick goals gave the Ammies extra confidence and they were on the front foot, looking for a third, with Bevan hunting for his hat trick. Depeiaza fired just over as did Bevan, who then agonisingly rattled the bar, only inches from notching his first hattrick for the Ammies.

Brocton to their credit never gave up and continued to press for a way back into the match and hit the post in the closing stages, before Haslam produced his customary world class save to keep the Ammies clean sheet intact. The last chance of the match fell to Jake Pollard but his effort was over the Brocton bar.

Full time saw a deserved Ammies win, maintaining their 100% record, in difficult weather conditions, and the lads will have to recover well now before looking to keep their unbeaten run going at home to Abbey Hulton United on Tuesday evening.
