A Stoppage Time Winner Seals 3 Points

The Ammies show their desire to win late again with Saul Henderson finding the back of the net in the 90th minute to claim all 3 points.

It was a scrappy start to the game from both sides, with Luke Worth picking up a booking in the 8th minute. Kieran Curtis had a particularly bright start, looking to attack every time he received the ball and supplying a flurry of early crosses but none were converted. The Ammies had the best chances of the half, most coming from Eddie Brown, who attempted an ambitious bicycle kick inside the box which struck the bar with force. Sandbach United’s chance of the half came on the 40th minute when a misplaced pass landed at the feet of Bobbie McDonnell, but the number 9 was unable to get any power behind his shot as he saw it roll into the hands of Kyle Haslam. Brown wasn’t done however as he saw another effort pushed past the near post by the Sandbach goalkeeper right on half time as he established himself as the most dangerous player on the pitch.

After a tame second half, both teams came out looking fresh and hungry for the 3 points. Both sides exchanged promising attacks but it was Sandbach United who thought they had broken the deadlock after some great forward passes down the Ammies’ right found an attacker in the box who slid his shot between the legs of Haslam. The referee put an end to the away team’s celebrations shortly however, due to a foul committed by Sandbach United in the box, keeping the score tied at 0-0. The disallowed goal served as a wake up call for the Ammies who now looked the much brighter of the two with debutant, William Shawcross, brought on from the bench, looking to dance around the Sandbach defence. Some great work in midfield drew a foul from Sandbach’s number 3, William Buckley, who was sent off for his second bookable offence of the day. The Ammies’, encouraged by finding themselves a man up, took the game to Sandbach for the remaining 20 minutes, but it was Haslam who had to be alert after a looping shot came in from Jack Hart on the 76 minute mark. It was in fact another substitute for the Ammies’ who stole the spotlight today however, as Saul Henderson, brought on with just 10 minutes to go, managed to get ahead of his man and flick on a perfectly placed cross into the back of the net in the 90th minute of play, sealing a hard fought win for the home side.

They left it late again but the players showed their heart and desire to win despite the frustrations of their tough opponents today. The Ammies now find themselves 4th in the table and looking to continue their winning ways against midtable opponents, Ellesmere Rangers next week.
