The Ammies continue great start

The Ammies continue great start with three points on their travels.

The Ammies travelled to last season’s beaten play off finalists New Mills, in a tough first away game of the 2022-23 season.

The Ammies made two changes to the team who beat Stockport Town on Saturday, with Jake Pollard returning to the starting line up in place of Sam Dickov who dropped to the bench, and Arthur Okonkwo making his first start of the season at the heart of defence.

The Ammies playing down the slope in the first half made a slow start to the game and in the second minute were relieved to see a well struck New Mills’ freekick rebound off the bar with Haslam beaten. They were also grateful for Luke Worth’s positioning in the 4th minute, when a long ball over the top saw the home team’s attacker beat the onrushing Haslam to the ball, but fortunately Worthy was in the right place at the right time to clear the danger.

Ammies striker Joe Bevan returning against his former team, was causing the home side problems with his runs in behind the defence and was unfortunate to see one shot narrowly pass the post while a second attempt was straight at the New Mill’s goalkeeper. Bevan was tackled late after firing the second attempt, and had to be substituted having dislocated his finger, with Jardell Depeiaza making his second substitute appearance of the season.

In the 23rd minute, Bryan Ly found himself with time and room outside of the New Mills box, and he struck a low well hit effort but the goalkeeper was equal to it in order to turn the ball wide for an Ammies corner which came to nothing.

The Ammies finished the first half strongly and came close to taking the lead when skipper Chris Howard hit the bar with a header from a set piece with Depeiaza not being able to turn the rebound home. Ly, Depeiaza and Pollard all drawing saves from the New Mill’s keeper to ensure the scores were level at half time.

The Ammies started the second half as they had finished the first and in 54th minute, skipper Chris Howard, went on a marauding run down the right wing, before being pulled back in the area by the New Mill’s left back. The referee had no hesitation in awarding the spot kick and Kieran Curtis stepped up and buried the penalty giving the goalkeeper no chance.

One soon became two for both Curtis and the Ammies as from the kick off the Ammies attacked the home goal and Curtis finished neatly into the far corner in the 56th minute. The Ammies sealed the three points in 65th minute when a sumptuous through ball from Charlie Duke, played Howard in behind the home defence and he squared the ball for an unmarked Depeiaza to score his first goal of the season.

Curtis came close to sealing his hattrick in 75th minute when Depeiaza was played through and his finish deflected off the goalkeeper into the path of Curtis, but his instinctive finished rolled agonisingly wide of the post.

The Ammies rang the changes with Dickov, Gabs Mooney-Munoz and Brad Sullivan all getting a run out as the Ammies looked to close the game down and secure their third win out of three, however Manager Goldrick will have been disappointed to see his side concede a late consolation goal at a set piece, with former Ammie Harrison Cunnigham heading home from a corner in 85th minute.

However that was to prove to be the last action of the match as the Ammies saw out the remaining five minutes and injury time to secure a vital 3 points on the road. Focus will now turn to the weekend visit of Brocton as the Ammies look to maintain their 100 percent start to the season.
