Wythenshawe’s pursuit for promotion started away at Stockport Town, immediately pressurising the Stockport defence, as early as the 10th minute Wythenshawe’s Figo won the ball out to Alan Dolan, cut in and with a sweet left foot found the inside corner past the outstretched Stockport keeper, Andrei Stinca. 0-1. Two minutes later Figo himself nearly doubled Ammies lead but denied by Stinca. Stockport had chances but could not breach the Ammies defence, superbly marshalled by Ammies skipper, Chris Howard.
It seemed only a matter of time before Ammies increased their lead with Dom Lillie, Ross Aikenhead, Nosa Iyamu, Figo and Terry Mupariwa all going close.
HT 0-1
The 48th minute as the great away followers were still finding their seats for the second half Lillie kept the ball in play, back into the path of Mupariwa who calmly slotted home. 0-2. One minute later Stockport pulled a goal back, a horrible bounce on the 3G surface caught out Ammies keeper, Martin Blain, fell to Town’s Jesurun Uchegbulam who lobbed into an empty net. 1-2.
On the hour mark there was the slightest of touches what appeared five yards outside the area, the referee saw it differently and awarded a penalty to Stockport, upstepped skipper, Kiarno Samms, struck it well but Blain saved down to his right. Minutes later Wythenshawe were denied a penalty when Sam Adewusi was brought down.
The new sin bin rule for dissent was brought in this season and Dolan, not the bookies favourite to be first, found himself shown the dugout for the remaining 10 minutes for questioning a two footed tackle on him. Wythenshawe’s first sinner.
